Kindergarten Memories

Inspired by Alison, I decided to have some fun reflecting on my childhood years.

Today, let's talk about kindergarten. Every day the bus would pick us up at two different bus stops for our half-day kindergarten. My teacher was Mrs Sowers, and she was really old. Here are some random events that happened during this ever-so-fun year:

I had my first boyfriend! I dated Albert, who always hung out at the gas station where his uncle worked. Our relationship ended when my friend Sunshine Fair (yes, her parents WERE hippies, how did you guess? lol) wanted to sit with us, and Albert didn't want her to.

We had a try-every-fruit day! Fun. Pineapple really stands out to me from that day. Maybe that's what I brought?

Tommy Cotton hit me with an airplane! I cried.

I got in trouble for the first time. I had to spend my recess doing make-up work, which included a sheet where we had to color certain things red. I wanted to play, so I scribbled all over the paper and handed it back. Mrs. Sowers was NOT impressed!

Christy Beckley decided that we all needed to learn to lip-read. She went inside the post office (our bus stop) and mouthed words through the glass window, and we had to tell her what she was saying. I really hated that. I kinda sucked at lip-reading.

Elizabeth Sanders didn't know how to blow her nose, and I remember how disgusted Mrs Sowers looked as she had to teach her. How can you look disgusted at an adorably dirty 5-year old? Elizabeth also got into her mom's perfume one day before class, and almost caused Mrs Sowers to have an asthma attack or something. Her parents hadn't washed the perfume off of her, and Mrs Sowers was mad at Elizabeth, which still seems very sad to me. It wasn't Elizabeth's fault!!!! 20 years later, my inner child still crys for Elizabeth. She ended up being held back a year, and was in LD classes when we got into high school... but when i re-met her in 8th grade, she was still a cool person! I liked her in Kindergarten and in high school! (I don't remember seeing her in between, at all, which is wierd. I even remember wondering what happened to her.)

So, there you have it... Kindergarten with Jana.

What memories do YOU have of kindergarten?

I just remember being REALLY bored with kindergarten. I could read before I got there and I was in an advanced class, but everything just seemed very boring. I remember playing Jingle Bells on the piano in our classroom much to my teachers amazement. Our class had just made some jinglebell craft thing and I told my teacher I wanted to play it so we all could sing. So she let me. I also remember there being an Asian girl that some of the other girls didn't talk to very much. One time one of the girls had a sleep over for her birthday and invited all the girls BUT her. I remember getting into their station wagon and wishing I could just stay there and stand next to the girl that got left behind.
And I was bored. Did I mention that? I was always really bored.

Aw, poor Elizabeth!
I remember getting sent to 'the office' and thinking I was in trouble, though not knowing what I did - when they called my grandma to come get me...but it was only because I had chicken pox, lol.
Enjoyed reading about your kindergarten memories!

Oh the crazy drama of kindergarten! How it deeply affects us. How odd she disappeared from your middle school years. Kindergarten is when I gave up on art and moved to Toronto, which was very traumatic for me. Hey, perhaps I'm having flashbacks?! And I'm using art to get over it. Wow, this has been a very helpful realization Jana, thank you! How much do you charge for a therapy session? ;)

I only have one memory of kindergarten and it's not a good one, either. You know the saying "kids can be so cruel"? Try being a 5-year-old with 3rd degree burn scars on the face riding the bus for the first time. The kids on the bus were MERCILESS. They teased me like something awful. I started to cry and ALL the kids starting singing the "crybaby song." It got so bad, the bus driver had to stop and took me right off the bus then drove away. It was AWFUL! And that's all I remember of kindergarten. I probably blocked out the rest of it! But I'm "reliving" kindergarten with my 6-year-old now and loving it. She had her first kiss today! It was sweet. :)
