As of the writing of this post, I am less than 12 hours away from my first ever vacation as a married gal!!!! I am SO ready. Tomorrow we'll be getting the bathroom cleaned out as much as possible, and the shed in the back yard cleaned out. Saturday we'll redo the bathroom flooring and the plumbing (that's me! Cute little plumber... in a skirt!). Sunday we'll do church and tie up loose ends with the renovations... and then our bags will be PACKED! (Which reminds me, I should probably pack those bags tomorrow. *adding that to list* lol)
We don't know yet where we are going for sure... if the supplies for the renovations are low enough, we would like to head to Kentucky and maybe go to Mammoth Caves. We're only 4 hours from there (I mapquested it lol) and I've always wanted to go. James went once before as a boy scout and loved it. Tours of the cave range from $5 - $24 per person (depending on which tour you want) and it costs $12-22 to camp there. (You get to choose from three different sets of sites to camp at.) We'll probably choose the $17 one, because it has SHOWERS! And really, who wants to smell me if we choose another campsite? If we are broke, we'll find some local park to camp at... or maybe somewhere in between if our finances are somewhere in the middle. Who knows... we might end up in Iowa or something lol The only thing for sure, is that we want to CAMP.
Now, my question is... we have never been camping before! We obviously need to buy a tent... (anyone have any recommendations?) but we also need to buy/borrow/beg for/steal the other stuff we'll need for our camping fun. Umm... but what DO I need? I'll make a little list, and maybe you all can help me add to it?
Tent
Sleeping bags
Food
Flashlights
Yarn (I take yarn everywhere... even camping.)
Charcoal (for cooking stuff), & aluminum foil
Cooler & Ice (lots of ice. LOTS.)
Bottled water (Mmm... made cold by the ice... )
Bug spray
What else can you think of? Any camping advice you want to share? (Please?)

How exciting! A real vacation AND adventure! Camping is lots of fun, we may do that soon too. Interesting timing, today's my husband's last day of work and then he gets a two-week holiday which rocks.
It may seem silly but getting one of those lights that goes on your head is invaluable, always having to carry a flashlight can get annoying, especially if you're reading.
I loved that comment, making that crappy place your home. That helped so much! LOL. I pick big challenges in my life don't I?
We used to camp ALL the time! It's great fun, I hope you enjoy it! Some of the additional camping gear we have:
blow up matress (personal preference)
long handled utensils for cooking over the fire. (We usually just grab our bbq-ing gear for this)
we also have a cool wire basket thingy with a long handle that works great, like this one: http://www.campmor.com/images/acc/80300.jpg (you can probably find one at Walmart)
small cutting board & a good knife
dr. bonner's biodegradable soap (for washing the pans/dishes)
a sheet in case it's too hot for sleeping bags
a good first aid kit (I take it so much for granted when I'm home and it's at my fingertips!!!)
at least one small kitchen pot for heating up water for coffee.
We love camping, we haven't gone yet this year but we're going twice this month and I can't wait!
Enjoy the adventure!
Yay! Vacation! I hope you have SO much fun!
I can't offer any advice about camping though! I'm not into camping, AT ALL! Smores and hotdogs though... that would be fun! :)
where ever you go have fun
and be safe

you never went for a honeymoon did you?
this is it
ENJOY HEAPS
I can help:
1. TOILET PAPER! Must not forget that.
2. Hand soap or anti-bacterial gel, but hand soap is better. We used to carry a few old milk jugs filled with water for washing our hands.
3. Toothbrushes and toothpaste.
4. Warm pj's and socks, it can get cold in the woods.
5. Books to read
6. Portable radio, for weather updates.
7. Extra batteries for flashlights and radio.
8. Paper plates and plastic forks and spoons.
9. Marshmellows, hershey bars and graham crackers for smores over the campfire.
10. Non-persishable snacks.
11. Garbage bags to keep your trash and place dirty clothes.
12. Extra clothes of everything.
13. Sunscreen
14. Towels if you are near a lake.
15. Cooking utensils.
16. Cooking spray
17. Pots or pans for eggs etc.
I think that should about cover it. Have a great time sweetie!!
I have never been camping. My husband and I were going to go once. We borrowed a little tent from a friend, but we ended up staying at a bed and breakfast.
Good luck and have fun!
headlight for sure ~ i love mine especially for going to late night washroom trips ;-)
regardless of the tent you get, make sure and get a comfy mattress of some sort, we have a battery operated blow up itself air mattress and i sleep like a baby :)
everything MJ said for sure ~ we love camping and have invested in some awesome gear which takes up little to no space, pots that fold into themselves and a portable coleman, teeny sleeping bags and pillows and awesome camp towels and i always take some freeze dried food for easy cooking after we've spent the day hiking and definitely stuff for banana boats (bananas, choco chips and marshmellows, tee hee). its nice to have a coleman lantern too, we have a battery operated one with a remote control, lol ... and a good strong plastic table cloth with clips for the picnic table and some strong twine string for hanging laundry ... oh and a tarp in case it rains ...
oh my gosh .. you are going to have so much fun!! : )
xoxo
Be sure to take rope. That's ALWAYS handy for camping, especially to keep stuff up high from animals.
I hear that baby wipes are good to have on hand, too. They're a great, quickie way to clean up.
Canteen to carry water with.
Lantern, towel, extra pair of shoes, matches, Ziploc storage bags (gallon size) and extra batteries/cards/film for your camera.
Have fun!
