Politics Today - Moral Issues

I've been looking over the '08 Presidential Candidates websites today, seeing how they feel about today's topic:

*~*~* MORAL ISSUES *~*~*

And really? I found polar opposites. Some candidates were all about "I feel _____ is wrong, so I will work to make it illegal." Others were all about "_____ isn't wrong, and we will work to give everyone the freedom to do it."

Some say that because they believe the Bible is true, everyone should be forced to live by it's laws. (This reminds me of Sharia law in Muslim countries. Scawy.) Some say that no one has the right to say what moral decisions can and can't be made. (Anarchy! Also scawy.) Some say that people should have the freedom to make moral decisions for themselves, and that isn't the government's responsibility to interfere in that unless the moral decision hurts another person.

So my question to you today (which actually was meant to be my "Friday Politics" question, but is a little late obviously) is:

Is it even POSSIBLE to legislate moral behavior?

Look at Prohibition... how did THAT work? My grandparents made some REALLY nice moonshine recipes because of it... so good, in fact, that they kept at it after prohibition ended! lol By outlawing abortion, will there be less abortions... or will the same amount just be done in back alleys with no safety? By forbidding gay marriage, will everyone automatically turn straight? (I'm giggling at this one.)

Obviously you can see my opinion.... so now, I want to know YOURS! :o)

Morality cannot be legislated. Look at all the loopholes lobbiests find every time the law is "tightened."

Morality is even slippier especially because no one agrees on what is moral. If killing is murder and people should fry because of it, what are we doing in Iraq with our collateral damage? (i.e., people, women, children, bystanders who are killed and raped by our guys)(yes it does happen). What happened to the Geneva convention rules on torture - how come that's ok for us now? Would you want your son waterboarded? As for abortion - my body is my body. If you want to argue the bible with me on that one, then I will tell you that the first thing god gave adam and eve was free will. Didn't say god had to like the choices, just that adam and eve got to make them. For me that settles the whole thing. Even if my right choice is your wrong choice.

Legislating morality is such a razor's edge. I am VERY liberal, so I tend toward the fact that I want my freedom to choose.

As far as abortion... I am PRO-choice. I do not think that outlawing abortion gets us anywhere - in fact it takes us back many steps. As a woman, I have the right to choose what to do with my body. There are too many unwanted, neglected, abused children in this world. Now... putting myself in a situation of having to choose, I don't know if I would choose abortion. That said... I want the right to make that choice.

Gay marriage - I absolutely think gay marriage should be legal. Why can't a couple of the same sex be as committed and loving as a heterosexual couple? They deserve the same rights as any other couple in my mind. By not allowing it, you cause a lot of strife unneccessarily.

The more freedoms we allow the "law-makers" to regulate, the less choice and voice we have. I don't like that! :)

If this is too much for your comments, please feel free to erase my comment. I appreciate you posting this and being open to opinion!! :) Hugs!

Oh goody! A Friday question for me to answer!

Since I am a born-again Christian washed by the blood of Jesus Christ and a consvertative I will post my answers from the Word of God.

First the bible is the absolute truth.

If you remember correctly, Adam and Eve chose to disobey God and therefore were cast out of paradise. This means that they sinned against God. And from them on God had to speak through many of His prophets to teach about redemption. And of course, there are the Ten Commandments which clearly states that we are not to commit murder. Abortion is a form of execution. An unborn baby is not part of a woman's body. It is a distinct separate, individual, human being, with their own beating heart, their own arms and legs, not a part or attached tp the mother's anatomy. Suffice it to say, abortion is murder and it should not be legalized. Every human being, whether born or unborn should have the right to life.

On homosexuality. The term "sodomy," named after the inhabitants of Sodom whose homosexual perversions caused God to rain fire and brimstone on their city in the days of Abraham (Genesis 19:4,5,12,24), has for thousands of years been synonymous with this unique form of ungodliness. That it is basically a sin of rebellion against God is evident Romans.

The "cause" for which God "gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves" was that they had decided to "worship and serve creation more than the Creator" (Romans 1:24-25 - KJV).

So, my answer, which was rather lengthy, is yes. It is very possible to legislate moral behavior. Our forefathers wrote the constitution based on biblical principles.

Wow! I have so much more to say, oh well.

It isn't about legislating morality - it is about standing for what is right so as to not bring the judgment of God on our country. Creating a law will not stop people from doing wrong, but it does say that the people of the country KNOW it is wrong and are not approving of it.

Abortion is murder. Some have said here it is their body to do with as they want, but they aren't killing their body, they are killing a baby, another life. What about their rights? 9 out of 10 times the mother had the choice when she choose to engage in sex (usually outside of marriage). Live with the choice you made and have the child and put it up for adoption. There are many many couples who long for a child to love.
Homosexuality is sin. It is an abomination to God and against the way God created man and woman. A country must stand against what is wrong, not throw open its arms and okay everything or the country will be taken down by corruptness. See my post on Romans 1 on my blog.
