More Than A Label

You know, as human beings some of us love to organize things. As a person who suffers from OCD, I completely understand the need to put things neatly in little compartments.

But WHY is it that we find the need to do this to people?

The gays. The Jews. The whites. The blacks. The Christians. The liberals. The conservatives. The rich. The poor. The Mexicans. The Muslims.

And then, those aren't enough. OH NO. We have to add insults to the descriptions. The Chinks, the bleeding-heart liberals, the queers, the towel-heads,...

Do we not remember that the people we are talking about are INDIVIDUAL BEINGS?! People who have lives, and stories, and names, and FACES?!

And you know what REALLY grinds my gears? (If you know where that quote comes from, please leave a note in the comments so I can love you extra-specially much.) It really grinds my gears when people use these labels on THEMSELVES!!!! "Well, I hate everything __*insert politician here*___ says because I'm a ________." "I don't believe in _*insert wierd belief here*__ because I'm a _______." "I hate the ________ because I *insert superior tone here* am a ______."

STOP HIDING BEHIND LABELS!!!!!

Be ORIGINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Define the REASONS for your beliefs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People could put all kinds of labels on me... labels that might be obvious, or might surprise you. Labels that might fit like a glove, or be about 10 sizes too big or too small.

But ya know what? Above and beyond ALL of those labels, I am an individual person.

I am Jana. And THAT label is quite enough, thank-you-very-much.

There are some labels that are ok, like you are pretty, creative, nice, well liked by many, wife, daughter, friend, resourceful, good cook, good blogger, great cousin. While I agree that some labels are not so good, I hope you like the ones that I think of you :) BTW, I have NO idea about the grind your gears quote :(

I can't imagine the labels people must put on me behind my back. I can't stand them either and love to celebrate people's individuality. Like yours! I celebrate all that is special and unique about you Jana.

Oh gosh! I may have been the culprit that inspired this post?

I do not believe labeling specific groups, in general, is altogether bad. For example...I am a Christian, which categorizes me with other fellow believers who love, worship and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. That's not a bad thing. Quite frankly, it lets me know that I am not alone and that I am part of an elite special group.

Not to mention the fact, that if you are in another country trying to get back into the United States, saying I am an "American" is quite helpful indeed.
